The volunteers for the Golden Town Outreach food bank in Meaford are optimistic they will find a new home soon.
The food bank is currently in the basement of the closed Meaford legion — and were going to move in the Spring.
But now volunteers are scrambling after the building’s boiler died last week.
Food Bank Co-ordinator Ann Pickles says they are wearing winter coats and gloves in the building and using a heater to keep the food from freezing.
Pickles says the heater is working for the moment — but she doesn’t know what will happen when the cold weather hits.
Pickles says the community has rallied behind their search for a new home.
She notes Council is looking at using a municipal building for the food bank, the Rotary Club has offered to help and the United Way is looking at covering their heating bill in their new home till June.
Pickles says they need to find a place that is rent free and accessible, has between 500 and 15 hundred square feet, washrooms and a kitchen.
The Golden Town Outreach Food Bank in Meaford serves over 200 people and client visits have jumped 30 per cent since September.
Pickles notes their shelves are full for now and they have over 50 coats to help families in need over Christmas.
