There may a recession going on all around us, but when it comes to children in need, residents of Bruce and Grey step up to the plate.
Operation Christmas Child spokesperson Joyce Scammell says they’ve gone way over the top.
Scammell says their goal this year was 25 hundred boxes.
Scammell says thanks to a huge effort by residents in the Auburn area, the local group is sending over four thousand “shoeboxes of love” to children in third world
countries.
She says last year Auburn came through with 150 boxes but this year that figure balloned to 18 hundred.
Scammell says the boxes are on their way to children in Central America and the Caribbean, along with South America and West Africa.
Countries within those broad catchment areas will receive the goods in time for Christmas.
The boxes usually contain, hygiene products, school supplies, some toys and perhaps some candies as well.
The gift boxes have been transported to Shallow Lake where other regional collections have been taken to the distribution centre in Kitchener.
Scammell says if some boxes are still being filled, people are asked to deliver them to her residence at 588 Elgin Street in Port Elgin and she will make sure they are sent away to be distributed.
