The Mayor of South Bruce is being cautious when it comes to involvement with the new Saugeen Mobility and Regional Transit (SMART).
The agency replaces the former Bruce, Grey and Huron Disability Transportation Corporation.
Mayor Bill Goetz acknowledges council did receive a petition when they decided to pull out of the former agency on March 1st.
Goetz says South Bruce thought it was paying more than it should, especially when there are no nursing homes in the municipality.
He adds they’re now looking at other options for service.
The Town of Hanover is responsible for over half of SMART’s 280 thousand dollar budget and wants South Bruce to pay for the 18 thousand dollars in service it has continued to receive since March.
However, Goetz says SMART kept providing the service to South Bruce residents after the notice was given, and they were never asked to stop.
Another factor Goetz says SMART hasn’t looked at yet is how much of its assets South Bruce is actually responsible for if it decides to not be part of the organization.
