A monumental day in Saugeen Shores.
Huron Bruce MP Ben Lobb, and MPP Carol Mitchell were among those in attendance at a groundbreaking event in Port Elgin Friday afternoon.
They along with other dignitaries and were on hand for ceremonies celebrating the start of a 28 unit affordable housing development.
It will be built at the corners of Wellington and River Streets.
The ceremony also included an announcement of 2.1 million dollars in funding from the provincial and federal governments.
Manager of Housing Services for Bruce County, Susan Earle says they hope to see construction begin in the spring and wrap up by January of 2011 at the latest.
Earle says some units are designed for seniors, and those with disabilities while others are for families.
However in all cases, they have to fall within a particular income bracket to qualify.
Rent is set at 453 dollars for a one bedroom and 565 dollars for a two bedroom.
Earle says in Saugeen Shores alone, the wait for affordable housing surpasses 140 people while in Bruce County that number is greater than three hundred.
