This is not the way to start the Christmas season.
16 workers at Hobart Food Equipment Group in Owen Sound received temporary layoff notices today.
Plant Manager Gary Duench says they are not seeing the income they normally get at this time of year.
He tells Bayshore Broadcasting News their customer orders have slowed at a time when they are normally busy.
Duench notes the recession in the U-S has slowed restaurant expansion — especially among the chain companies.
He also notes their international markets are soft.
But Duench doesn’t anticipate any more layoffs in the foreseeable future.
There are about 120 workers remaining at Hobart in Owen Sound — which manufactures commercial dishwashers.
The company laid off almost 50 people in February — and some of the workers laid off today had been called back to work in May.
