Georgian College in Owen Sound wants to make sure its Police Foundations program is working well.
The College is hosting focus group meetings this afternoon with police chiefs, OPP commanders and private security managers.
Instructor Terry Bell says they have invited people who have contributed to the program in the past and know the industry.
Bell says they want to look at any changes in the industry as well as new standards and trends to ensure they are leading their students on the right path.
Bell says they will look at what hiring personnel look for in recruits and what educational requirements students need.
Bell says they also want to look at different issues — from life skills to dealing with diversity and different cultures.
Bell — a former OPP officer — feels a police officer’s job is more complex today.
He points to the fact that now officers have to know about the different cultures in the community.
Bell says he is proud of Georgian’s program and feels it’s current and contemporary.
But he credits the involvement of the community — from different municipal police services to the security team at Bruce Power to lawyers and the media.
Bell says they get excellent support from the community.
The focus group sessions will take place from 12 Noon to 3 PM today at the Georgian College campus in Owen Sound.
