There will be no dedicated seniors centre in the new 33 million dollar regional recreation complex in Owen Sound.
What will happen to the space set aside for the seniors centre, though, has yet to be determined.
City council accepted a recommendation from the ad hoc committee to focus on established facilities for seniors at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre.
The committee — which was met twice — was formed to address concerns about the amount of space provided solely for seniors in the new complex.
The Bayshore has provided facilities for seniors for many years, and the committee has decided to support efforts to have a dedicated place there for seniors.
The elimination of a seniors centre from the rec complex is expected to save several hundred thousand dollars, assuming the space is not reallocated.
But Councillor Jim McManaman says the project will remain at least one million dollars over budget.
McManaman — the Chair of the Rec Complex steering committee — says there is a chance some of the savings could be redirected to address other issues — such as spectator seating in the pool and arena areas.
But He says it’s just as likely, if not more so, that all of the savings will be put toward the bottom line of the project.
Construction will begin later this fall on the complex, which will be completed by the spring of 2011.
