Volunteer students from the Construction Class at Saugeen District Secondary School in Port Elgin are restoring a dune eco system in Southampton today.
They’re taking part in a project on behalf of the municipality of Saugeen Shores.
Project Spokesperson Adrienne Mason says the dune grasses in the Bay Street area of Southampton were disturbed when a water intake line was installed.
Mason says the students will be re-planting dune grasses to act as a buffer between the beach and built environment.
The grasses keep all of the soft dry sand on the beach, rather than have it blow elsewhere.
Mason says the planting of the dune grasses also encourages the return of wildlife to its natural habitat, including butterflies and various shorebirds.
The students are working on the project from 9 AM to 3 PM today.
