A pilot project is being launched in Craigleith to fight crime.
Community Watch organizers hope it can turn back the clock a bit so that neighbours will watch out for their neighbours — like they did years ago.
Larry Hall is the Chair of the Community Policing Committee.
He says an OPP Constable will be assigned to work in the community, and will have a long tenure there so he-or-she gets to know the people and the issues.
Hall says the core of the program is Neighbourhood Watch, complimented by Traffic Watch and Business Watch.
Neighbourhood Watch is based on people being alert for signs of possible trouble — such as a group of people carrying cartons of beer into a rental unit, or cars going slow past unoccupied homes.
Traffic Watch is designed to have people in the community report drunk drivers, and dangerous driving.
Business Watch is a program designed to harden the target for criminals.
In the Blue Mountains area, Hall says there is a break and enter every three days on average.
Hall also notes there is an act of vandalism every four days.
Hall says they are still looking to recruit more volunteers and expand the program to include Thornbury, Clarksburg and Lora Bay.
