One of the people opposed to the expansion of the Keppel Quarry northwest of Owen Sound is furious that signs explaining their opposition have been removed by order of Grey County.
Nancy Shouldice says what’s even more disturbing is county workers went onto private property to remove the signs.
She says when she returned to her property, which is located about three kilometres from the proposed quarry expansion, the signs identifying the five environmental groups opposed to the expansion had disappeared.
Shouldice then noticed a County of Grey truck with a number of the signs in the back.
She says signs were paid for by private individuals are were on private land and the county has no right to remove them.
Shouldice says the signs were quite straight forward, simply explaining their opposition to the quarry expansion and listing the five environmental groups who share concerns about the impact it will have on local rare species and a Provincially Significiant wetland.
Grey County’s Transportation Director Gary Shaw meanwhile, says the only signs that were taken down were ones that were on the County’s road allowance, which would be in violation of their sign by law.
He says his workers would never venture onto private property to remove any signs.
However, Shaw says he is going to double check with his road crews just to make sure no signs on private property were taken down inadvertently..
He says the only signs allow on the County road allowance are election signs and real estate signs.
