It is a sure sign that the holidays are upon us as MADD Canada kicks off its Red Ribbon campaign today.
The Mothers Against Drunk Driving campaign runs through until January 1st.
Grey Bruce North Chapter Spokesperson Melissa Mockler Wunderlich says this initiative saves lives by making people aware to drink responsibly this holiday season.
The campaign is the largest awareness focus for MADD.
Accidents caused by drunk driving cause 70-thousand injuries a year in Canada — and is Canada’s leading criminal cause of death every year according to Mockler Wunderlich.
She hopes people will pick up their red ribbons at retailers and display them on their cars, backpacks and wallets to show support.
Mockler Wunderlich says this campaign is aimed at reducing the numbers of drinking and driving cases for all ages.
She adds there has been recent measures taken by the government to step up measures for the cause.
If you are pulled over and have a blood alcohol level over point zero 5 — you will get your drivers license suspended anywhere from 3 to 30 days and your car will be impounded.
While she says this not a new law – but is has been strengthened and fines are now greater.
Mockler Wunderlich says if you are hosting a party this holiday — be a responsible host and offer non alcoholic beverages for the designated driver – take keys if necessary – offer food and monitor your guests intake of alcohol.
MADD Canada have been bringing their message to the public for over 20 years now.
