The Bruce Grey and Huron Disability Transportation Corporation has a new name and a new budget.
Hanover is now responsible for 54 per cent of the 280 thousand dollar budget for the Saugeen Mobility and Regional Transit (SMART).
Mayor and Transit Board Chair Kathi Maskell says this works out to be 154 thousand dollars.
Maskell calls it a huge impact on the town’s budget considering the fact Hanover is going from paying nothing in the past to 154 thousand dollars.
But Maskell says Hanover will gladly pay its share.
She wants to assure seniors and users of the disability van service that the town has no intention of pulling its support from this essential service.
Maskell does however want the SMART Board of Directors to sit down and discuss how the service can be run more efficiently and effectively in the future.
Meanwhile Hanover Councillor Selwyn Hicks hopes the municipality of South Bruce will pay its share.
South Bruce pulled out of the Disability Service last March but continued to receive services for its residents all year long.
Hicks feels in act of good faith — South Bruce should cover the 18 thousand dollars worth of service its residents received over the last 10 months.
If South Bruce did pay its share, Hanover’s portion will drop from 154 thousand to 146 thousand dollars this year.
