The Grey Bruce Health Unit would like to see you pay up if you’re caught lighting up in certain outdoor places in Saugeen Shores.
The agency wants to see an end to allowing smoking at outdoor spectator sporting events and in playgrounds.
It believes smoking around young people who are playing the sports could influence them to take up the habit later on.
Health Promoter Jason Weppler says they’re hoping it will limit some of what people can do outside.
He says there’s no safe level of second hand smoke, even outdoors, and their concern is protecting children while they’re outside being active.
Saugeen Youth Coalition member Nicola Bruce says ideally, they want no tobacco use at any outdoor sports and recreation facility, including parks and football fields.
Weppler says the current effort in Saugeen Shores came from the efforts of the now-defunct anti-tobacco Youth Action Program.
The province cancelled its funding earlier this year.
Weppler says its peer leaders were the initial drive behind the effort, but the health unit is continuing to push the message forward.
Council has asked town staff to examine the possibility of a smoking ban at parks and outdoor sports fields.
Similar bans exist in Owen Sound and Collingwood.
