One person in Grey Bruce is fighting for their life in hospital with H1N1.
Bayshore Broadcasting News has learned an unidentified person has been on a respirator with the H1N1 flu.
The Grey Bruce Health Unit also confirms the condition of a young child hospitalized with H1N1 has improved.
Our Medical Officer of Health Doctor Hazel Lynn says they are noticing about 5 new cases of H1N1 in the region each day so the virus is here.
Through the surveillance program of all local hospitals, Doctor Lynn says they have noticed a huge spike in flu like cases in the 0 to 17 age group.
The Health Unit also reports the overall school absentee rate in Grey Bruce is about 12 per cent.
But the situation is more severe in certain areas.
For example — hundreds of students at Kincardine District Secondary have called in sick this week.
And the Principal has instructed staff not to present new material or work today so that sick students won’t feel they have to come to school so they won’t miss anything.
The only restrictions at Grey Bruce Health Services is one visitor at a time at the Women and Child Care Unit in Owen Sound.
The South Bruce Grey Health Centre is only allowing one visitor between 2 PM and 4 PM at its hospitals in Kincardine, Chesley, Walkerton and Durham.
No visitors will be allowed at the Family Birthing Centre in Walkerton.
At the Collingwood hospital — no visitors under 18 are allowed and only visitor will be allowed at one time between 1 PM and 8 PM.
