It’s Go Green at Saugeen time this weekend.
The Community Foundation of Grey Bruce’s annual environmental forum – sponsored by Bayshore Broadcasting – is underway at the CAW Family Education Centre in Saugeen Shores.
At Friday evening’s opening ceremonies, this year’s Malcolm Kirk Award for the Environment was handed out by Bayshore Broadcasting General Manager Ross Kentner.
The winner is Dave Wedge of Southampton.
Since 2002, the avid SCUBA diver has led annual “Tub Scrub” harbour cleanup efforts in Tobermory that have since spread to Port Elgin.
Wedge says he decided to start the annual fall cleanup when he was sitting at the Tobermory dock while the harbour was being dredged and noticed lots of old bottles being salvaged.
Wedge says over the years, they’ve found lots of tires, old shopping carts, a few motors, and even the original highway sign that once welcomed visitors to Tobermory.
The award is named in honour of Malcolm Kirk, who served as manager of the former North Grey and Sauble Conservation Authorities.
He was responsible for establishing several conservation areas in the Grey-Bruce region.
Community Foundation of Grey-Bruce Executive Director Roberta Brignell is pleased with how the forum has started.
She says 700 enthusiastic youth took part in Friday’s youth forum at Saugeen District Secondary School, and the enthusiasm continued into the evening opening dinner and keynote address by Spirit Bear Youth Coalition founder Simon Jackson.
The forum continues on Saturday with workshops featuring guest speakers, and a trade show.
Admission is 20 dollars.
