A number of police officers in dress uniform will be lining the bridge on Pretty River Parkway this weekend to honour the only Collingwood officer to die in the line of duty.
The bridge will be named to honour Sargeant Ron McKean and the dedication ceremony will be held at 11 AM tomorrow.
Collingwood and Blue Mountains OPP Inspector John Trude says this a great way to honour Sargeant McKean’s memory and support the wife and three children he left behind.
One of his sons, Trevor McKean, is now the high school liaison officer with Collingwood OPP.
Sargeant Ron McKean was shot at close range by an escaped convict in October of 1977.
Inspector Trude says McKean was called to the Tremont Hotel and was going in the front door when the con, William Fredericks, pulled out a sawed off shotgun and fired at McKean.
McKean was pronounced dead at the scene.
Fredericks later pled guilty in court and was sentenced to 25 years in a federal prison.
Trude says the public is welcome to remember such a fine officer at the dedication at 11 AM followed by a reception at the Legion.
