Owen Sound Mayor Ruth Lovell Stanners says seniors in the city have a right to be outraged at the lack of space being allocated to them in the proposed new Recreation Complex.
Plans unveiled Tuesday night show that just one per cent of the centre will be directed for seniors use, or only 800 square feet of the total 125 thousand square feet in the complex.
Seniors told city officials they need and want a social centre that is part of the recreation complex that is affordable and inclusive to all.
Mayor Lovell Stanners says she agrees and is glad the issue was brought to Council’s attention.
She says a special committee will take into account all the comments that came out of the public meeting and the seniors concerns will be addressed.
Mayor Lovell Stanners says she knows of no other city the size of Owen Sound that does not have a large single location seniors centre.
She says at present, activities for seniors are spread all across the city and that is not acceptable.
Lovell Stanners says the seniors have given a lot to this city and continue to do so through their many volunteer hours.
She says simply — it’s pay back time.
