A major donation from Saugeen Shores’ two Rotary clubs means a surge ahead in fundraising for an accessible playground.
The Southampton and Port Elgin clubs are each chipping in 25 thousand dollars for the playground, which will be located at Jubilee Park in Southampton.
The 50 thousand dollar donation means only 96 thousand is left to be raised.
Councillor Victoria Serda is involved with the fundraising and is excited about the donation and says it will be very meaningful for residents of all abilities.
Southampton Rotary Community Service Director Tony Sheard says the club decided to get behind the project because they raise money from all residents, and the project could benefit people of all ages and abilities.
The Rotarians could also have earned the right to have their name on the facility too.
Town Recreation and Culture Manager Jayne Jagelewski says the 50 thousand dollar donation meets the criteria to have naming rights — if council approves.
She says the playground itself would be called Rotary Park, but the rest of the area would still be called Jubilee Park.
Jagelewski says the fundraising campaign has so far been based mostly on asking for donations, but one other service club is planning a fundraiser.
She says the Chambettes are holding a Christmas house tour of homes in Saugeen Shores on November 20th and 21st.
The event is being held in conjunction with the Tara Curling Club, but the majority of the proceeds will go towards the accessible playground.
