The message comes from Grey County OPP as a seatbelt enforcement campaign sets up for next week in the area.
Constable Steve Starr says you can expect not to be given a warning to wear your seat belt – fines will be issued.
He adds there is a 92-percent compliance with the law – it is the other 8-percent that is the concern.
Starr says the time for warnings is long gone.
Charges stemming from failure to use seatbelts or child restraints is set at 85-dollars – plus a 25-dollar court fee. Add on two demerit points from your driving record and will stay there for two years.
Starr says children’s safety will be brought to light during this campaign as well – and fines will be issued for children not safely buckled in.
Booster seats are mandatory for kids under 8 years old – minimum 4 foot nine and a weight of 80 pounds.
Starr says by the end of last month 629 collisions were investigated.
17 people died in the accidents – and police say 4 of those people would have survived if seatbelts had been worn.
Starr says it is not the only component in accident and death prevention – but it is certainly a strong one.
Starr says there will be more officers out in force for this bi-annual campaign.
