Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is pledging further development towards installing body cameras on police as part of Canada’s response to systemic racism in this country.
Trudeau says he’s watched recent reports and videos of violence against black Canadians and indigenous people.
On Friday he took a knee and listened during an Ottawa protest. He says he hears and sees groups impacted by racism.
The PM says many in the black and indigenous communities don’t feel protected by police and are in fact, afraid of them
Today he pledged to accelerate the pace of change by starting dialogue with the Premiers towards installing body cameras on police.
“Together, we have made progress,” he said. “Progress that has meant support for groups like the Black Health Alliance and new schools for indigenous kids. But I hear you when you say it isn’t enough. I hear you when you say it doesn’t solve systemic racism.”
On Friday, Trudeau discussed the issues with cabinet and the RCMP Commissioner.
Canada Minister of Public Safety Bill Blair too has also spoken with the PM about racism and is pledging action when it comes to policing indigenous people.
