The battle against the seasonal flu kicks off in Grey Bruce Thursday with the first public flu clinic taking place.
The difference this time is the clinic is only open to seniors over the age of 65.
Manager of Vaccine Preventable Disease Program Karen Sweiger says they are targeting the older adults because there is evidence they could have a certain immunity to the H1N1 virus so they need the seasonal vaccine.
She says seniors are more likely to develop complications from the seasonal flu that could result in very serious illness and even death that is why they are getting the shot first.
Sweiger says for the rest of the population, the seasonal flu shot has been rolled back until after people get the H1N1 vaccine, which will be administered begriming next month.
She says the seasonal shot, the most common side effect is soreness around the injection site and on a very rare occasion there could be an anaphylactic reaction.
Sweiger says people who should not get a flu shot are those allergic to eggs and infants under the age of six months.
The first of five flu shot clinics for seniors takes place at the Grey Bruce Public Health Building in Owen Sound from 10 AM until 7 PM.
No appointments are necessary and the vaccine is free.
Sweiger says four other clinics will be held in October.
There will be one at Walkerton District Secondary School on Tuesday the 20th from 4 PM until 7 PM.
There will be another on Thursday October the 22 at Saugeen District Secondary School from 4 PM until 7 PM and at Kincardine District Secondary School on Monday October 26th.
Then back in Owen Sound again on Thursday October 29th from 10 AM until 7 PM.
