It isn’t Wimbledon, but tennis is quickly becoming a popular past time in Inverhuron.
Kevin Kenny, the Sports and Recreation Director for the Inverhuron and District Ratepayers Association says efforts to establish a new tennis club in the community — and eventually build two new courts are showing success.
He says there is interest in building the courts in the park at the corner of Albert Road and County Road 15.
He says the Municipality of Kincardine has already put 25 thousand dollars in reserves for the courts.
The Association has done research to establish what Kenny describes as a “tennis community” in Inverhuron.
Kenny says the sand and rock beaches of Invehuron are now divided into the two divisions of the Inverhuron Tennis Club and there are about 250 members.
He says an account has been set up and fundraising efforts are underway.
Kenny says money from the 75 dollar family memberships will be held in trust and then other fundraising activities will take place to build the courts, and eventually a clubhouse.
The estimated cost of the courts is 75 to 80 thousand dollars.
Kenny says the Ministry of Natural Resources is supportive of the tennis court plans, because campers at the nearby Inverhuron Provincial Park could use them too.
He says Bruce Power and Ontario Power Generation are also supportive because the courts would be convenient for employees to use because they’re so close to their facilities at Douglas Point.
Kenny plans to visit Kincardine Council again in October to give an update on the club’s progress.
He hopes work on the courts could start late next spring and be ready for an official opening on Canada Day.
