Kincardine Council has decided to apply for funding to make the municipality more environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable.
Mayor Larry Kraemer says the Green Municipal Fund is administered by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities on behalf of the federal government.
He says in total, the fund is worth over 500 million dollars.
Kraemer says the idea behind it is for communities to develop an integrated sustainability plan, similar to the Community Plan Kincardine is developing, but much more in-depth, or as the Mayor says “on steroids.”
He says it’s meant to be a lasting, long-term plan that encompasses all components of the municipality.
Making the application is expected to cost the municipality approximately three thousand dollars in consulting fees.
However, having a sustainability plan will make the municipality more eligible to receive certain government grants in the future.
