A 2.5 million dollar project to shore up the Neustadt Sewage Lagoon is now done.
West Grey Mayor Kevin Eccles says the diversion of the South Saugeen River, was completed several months ago — but a number of small details, including landscaping, were worked on thru the summer.
The primary work involved the digging of a new channel to move the South Saugeen riverbed back about 100 to 150 metres from the lagoon.
The new banks have been stabilized with rock and other technologies so it doesn’t erode back toward the lagoon.
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries also wanted natural products like trees and grass used, so that landscaping was recently completed.
Mayor Eccles says the project is intended to keep the river from eroding right into the lagoon and releasing raw sewage into the Saugeen river system.
Eccles says the value of the project will likely be debated by residents for years, but the actual cost came in on target at 2.5 million.
