Walkerton’s Sacred Heart High School will soon offer a college program to students.
This Dual Credit program is geared towards students at risk of not going to college.
The evening program is a joint venture between the Bruce Grey Catholic District and Bluewater District School Boards and Georgian College.
Under the program, high school students can earn a college credit by participating in apprenticeship training and a post secondary course that will also count towards their high school diploma.
Students will receive instruction from a college professor one day a week, from a high school teacher two days a week, and spend another two days at their co-op placement.
The program is open to students in both the separate and public board who live in the southern end of Grey Bruce Counties.
Up until now the Dual Credit Program was only available to students in the Owen Sound area because it was offered at Georgian College.
Superintendent of Secondary Education Jerry Casey says the Dual Credit Program has been very successful in Owen Sound.
He says 80 per cent of the students who take the program do end up going to college.
Casey says the program provides students with the opportunity to take a college program without paying the tuition costs.
The Sacred Heart Dual Credit Program will begin next semester the topic The Social Impact of Technology.
