You’d be surprised at what’s laying on the bottom of local harbours.
That’s what over 30 scuba divers recently discovered during a cleanup of Port Elgin harbour.
Doug Freiburger — an avid scuba diver who owns Groundhog Divers in Port Elgin — and is also Deputy Mayor of Saugeen Shores, led the effort.
Freiburger says they found a barbecue, mattress, cigarette butt container, and bicycles laying on the bottom of the harbour.
He says every year, they never know what they’re going find, but he thinks a lot of the objects end up underwater because of mischief happening in town.
Freiburger says divers thrive on a clear, pristine water environment, and want to be part of opportunities to take things out of the water that shouldn’t be there.
