The first stage of a new recreational path along one of Saugeen Shores’ most scenic drives is about to be built.
Council has approved the construction of a gravel base and culverts for a 3.3 kilometre path along Miramichi Bay and North Shore Roads along the Lake Huron Shoreline.
The path means that the shoulders of the road will eventually be paved in the spring of 2010.
Councillor Luke Charbonneau is proud of the fact that it’s another link in what will soon be a 40 kilometre loop trail stretching from the northern to southern limits of Saugeen Shores.
He doesn’t think there’s any other small community in Ontario that can claim 40 kilometres of trails.
The new path will have connecting links to Port Elgin and Southampton, but some of them are on streets — not other trails.
Charbonneau says in Port Elgin, connections include Market Street, Fenton Drive and Lord Elgin Estates, and South Street will link the new path with the Rail Trail in Southampton.
He says there is still some work to do in order to improve roadway connections over the next few years, but he says the new path along the shore represents the biggest piece of the trail puzzle.
