A program that helps youth deal with some serious issues by relating to horses is hosting an open house this weekend.
The Partners in Process Equine Learning Centre near Owen Sound is the first of its kind in the province.
It has received federal funding to start up and continue for three years.
It helps youth dealing with substance abuse – self-esteem – eating disorders and even A-D and D.
Operations Manager Al Edwards says the program has been a great success so far as they sit halfway through their piolet program.
This Saturday the Centre is hosting an open house from 10 o-clock until noon with live demonstrations.
It is the first time the public can see hands on the innovative equine therapy program.
Edwards says they will show in the demonstration how – through this non-riding program – youth can relate to the horses and come to the root of their problems.
Edwards says there are youth mainly from the Grey Bruce area involved that are recommended through several agencies – including the Children’s Aid Society.
The therapy gets kids into an open arena with the horses and lets them learn to trust them – pet them and relate to them.
Edwards says the program thus far has proven results with facilities from across the country contacting them for further information.
Edwards stresses this is not a riding program – and that is one component that makes it unique.
The open house is at the centre at Highway 6 and 10 – south of the Rockford lights.
