Grey County is considering an increase in speed limits on some county roads to 90 kilometres an hour.
Southgate Mayor Don Lewis first brought the idea up at the annual Warden’s forum in Durham earlier this month.
Warden Kevin Eccles says on some roads, particularly new county roads, it would make sense.
Eccles says there are limitations, where roads with a lot of hills or curves would not qualify, but he can see several others that could be increased.
Lewis proposed the increase, saying truckers are used to the higher speed limits in areas like Huron County where most county roads have a 90 km/h speed limit already.
Warden Kevin Eccles says the 80 km/h speed limit dates back to the 1970’s and an oil crisis that led North America to scale back highway speed limits as a way of reducing our dependance on imported oil.
Eccles says the idea is now off to the Transportation Committee and should be on the agenda in a few weeks.
The Warden says if Grey County decides to impose higher speed limits on some roads, Queens Park will likely approve the move.
