If you were stranded at sea, would you expect half of the local town council to rescue you?
That’s exactly what happened to a Stratford man this past Sunday morning on Lake Huron, just off of Southampton.
Saugeen Shores Councillor Diane Huber had taken Vice Deputy Mayor Doug Gowanlock, and Councillors Taun Frosst and Luke Charbonneau on the Peerless tour boat to Chantry Island to highlight the work the Marine Heritage Society does there.
While they were returning, Gowanlock noticed a man waving a a lifejacket from an oar in the distance.
Huber says the Peerless immediately turned its course towards the man, whose boat motor had stopped working.
She says the lake was rough and it was good they were there to help him.
Huber says Vice Deputy Mayor Gowanlock helped out the wheelhouse, guiding the captain while he put the boat in the right position.
Huber says Councillor Frosst was at the back of the boat, throwing a rope to the stranded boater while she was at the side making sure the two vessels didn’t crash into each other.
Gowanlock says when he first spotted the boat, it was starting to drift towards southwesterly towards Michigan, and the man in it was very happy when they arrived to help him.
Gowanlock says when they told him he had been rescued by Saugeen Shores Council, his answer was “wow.”
