Owen Sound Council is committed to ensuring there will be a skateboard park in the city for young people.
That promise from Mayor Ruth Lovell Stanners and Councillor Jim McManaman after concerns were raised by some skateboarders once the old park is demolished, a new one wont be built.
The new Family Health Team Medical Clinic will be constructed on the location of the existing skate park.
Both Mayor Lovell Stanners and McManaman say the number of young people using the existing facility shows that it really works and this is a perfect opportunity to design a proper modern skateboard park.
McManaman says this now gives Council the opportunity to upgrade and improve the skateboard park and it now will move to the top of their agenda.
He says what will happen is next year the skateboard park will be relocated to a temporary location while council and the cities young people work out a proper design for a new park which he feels could be operational by 2011.
Both Mayor Lovell Stanners and McManaman both agree its vital that the young people who use the park are involved in every way in the planning for the new facility and where it will be located.
McManaman says right now they don’t really know where the new park should be located.
Lovell Stanners says one thing they have learned from the existing park is not to locate it near any housing as the sound of skateboards on concrete can be very annoying for residents, especially at night.
