The construction of a new home for the Owen Sound Family Health team will see the demolition of Owen Sound skateboard park on First Avenue West near the boat launch.
The medical clinic will occupy land where the skate park now is located, and some skateboard enthusiasts fear that once its gone, it will never come back.
One city councillor says the park will be relocated, but the Operator of the skateboard and ski shop Vertical is not so sure.
Cory Restrick says he fears once the park is bulldozed, it will be gone for good.
He says they city has never put any serious money into making the park an attractive place for young people to practice their sport and this could be a way for the city to wash its hands of the park once and for all.
Restrick says not every young person in Owen Sound is into hockey or soccer or baseball or other team sports, but skateboarding is a very active sport and should be encouraged.
He points to Port Elgin as a community that knows the value of providing a good facility for local skateboarders.
Restrick says that community spent almost 300 thousand dollars on the skate park a facility that will be serving the youth of Port Elgin for years to come.
He warns if the city does not replace the skate park, then the skateboarders could very well start using sidewalks and other public areas to practice their sport.
