The annual Superwalk for Parkinson’s is taking place in Hanover, Kincardine and debuts in Owen Sound this weekend.
The first walk takes place today at Hanover Park with registration at 9 AM and the actual walk begins at 10:30 AM.
It’s the second annual walk in Hanover where local residents raised almost 13 thousand dollars last year.
The goal this year is 16 thousand dollars.
The 9th annual Kincardine walk takes place at 1 PM tomorrow at Victoria Park and the goal is to at least match last year’s total of 19 thousand dollars.
The 1st annual walk in Owen Sound also takes place at 1 PM tomorrow at Harrison Park.
Walkers will have the choice of going two kilometres or five kilometres.
Parkinson’s disease — a chronic, degenerative neurological condition without a known cause or cure — slowly disables a person.
Stats show more than 100 thousand Canadians have it and that number is expected to double by 2016.
Shelley Ralf is the Co-ordinator for Special Events for the Parkinson Society of Southwestern Ontario.
Ralf says the 3 walks locally are part of 11 being held across Southwestern Ontario this weekend.
She is confident they can reach their regional goal of 340 thousand dollars.
Ralf says the money raised will go to Parkinson’s programs and research.
The Terry Fox runs are also being held across the region this weekend and Ralf doesn’t know how that will affect their numbers.
But Ralf notes the participants are usually connected to the cause so they hope it won’t impact their numbers.
