Its hoped provincial money for a local program will help more male survivors of sexual abuse get help.
The program called ‘Hearing Healing Hope’ is a collaboration of five community organizations including G & B House, The Men’s Program, and the Children’s Aid Society.
Program Co ordinator May Tettero says they’ve received 134 thousand dollars for two years to allow expansion of the program to not only counsel the men themselves but also their families.
Tettero says when men don’t seek help after sexual abuse..they tend to turn to drugs or alcohol at some point…or act out their feelings of frustration with their family members.
She says men feel a great deal of shame in these instances and its very difficult to get them to come forward to talk about it.
Tettero says they hold three 12 week sessions a year at various locations around Grey Bruce depending on where the greatest need is.
Their next one will be conducted in Owen Sound starting the third week of September.
