No money has been made available yet to West Grey for the reconstruction of the Durham Activity Centre.
But the municipality is still moving forward with plans to rebuild the Elm Street fitness facility, which was destroyed in last months tornado.
West Grey council last week agreed in principle to support the reconstruction of the municipally owned non-profit activity centre.
It has been operated for many years by a volunteer board of management with no financial burden to the municipality.
Council was told on Wednesday that its insurer still has not made a final determination as to how much money West Grey can expect to receive to rebuild the structure.
As of May 2008 — according to a report from the CAO — the replacement value of the activity centre was over 476 thousand dollars.
Members of council asked why the insurance company had yet to cut a cheque for that amount, or for any amount.
Councillor John Black notes the insurance company has had three weeks and plenty of time to let the municipality know where things stand.
Councillor Carol Lawrence says it’s time to get aggressive with the company.
Councillor Bev Plume suggests a company representative be invited to a future council meeting to explain itself.
Deputy Mayor Dan Sullivan — who is also a member of the activity centres board of management — remains hopeful of a quick resolution in their favour.
Despite the lack of commitment to date from the insurer, West Grey is still committed to the activity centres reconstruction.
Councillors Bev Plume and Bev Cutting will sit on a new sub-committee along with members of the board of management in order to push the project forward.
Council also approved a motion to appoint Dawley Engineering of Hanover as the consulting firm responsible for the preparation of tender documents for the design and rebuild.
Sullivan says the goal remains to have the new facility finished and open to the public in early 2010.
