After years of trying, Varney Speedway has convinced Rick Mercer to compete at the track.
The producers of “The Rick Mercer Report” say they will be at Varney Motor Speedway this Saturday to tape a segment for Ricks upcoming season.
Mercer will find himself in the third car of the black “RMR Train set” as he tries to negotiate the high banks and all the other train sets in what should prove to be an entertaining ride.
For those not familiar with the Trains of Varney Speedway — each Train consists of three cars, the first having an engine, steering and brakes, then a three foot chain to the second car which only has steering and brakes — and another three foot chain to the third car which again only has steering and brakes.
Think of it as a game of crack the whip but only with cars and throw in the tight high banks which have made Varney Speedway famous in Ontario and you have one of the most entertaining races you will ever witness.
Rick Mercer is due to be at the speedway in the afternoon to meet drivers in the Pit area and for a little practice and instruction time for his two big races.
If you want to be part of the action the front gates open at 5 PM and the regular racing program kicks off at 7 PM with taping going on throughout the afternoon and evening.
Mercer is also going to go into the stands and meet and talk to spectators also.
