The Ministry of Environment was called out to a dump fire near Markdale — but officials say there was no threat to the public.
Grey Highlands mayor Brian Mullin says spontaneous combustion is blamed for starting the fire Wednesday afternoon in the Markdale-Holland landfill site.
That dump is used by Chatsworth and Grey Highlands residents.
Mullin says the fire started in the “Grindage pile” which is made up of construction debris.
The material is ground up and used as coverage by the municipality.
Because it is not clean wood, Mullin says there was a putrid smell in the air and smoke could be seen for miles.
It was out and the site was cleared by 6 AM today.
MOE officials say there were no toxic fumes in the air.
