A children’s counting book is creating a lot of local buzz.
Shelley Norman of Kincardine is the creator of the colouring book, Bruce County Counts that was just released earlier this month.
Norman runs a daycare out of her home and says she came up with the idea because most counting books are about apples or bananas.
She says this book features things children would see on a regular basis and they can learn something about the area they live in at the same time.
The book counts things such as one ferry at Tobermory to five windmills turning in the breeze in Tiverton all the way to 10 bagpipers in Kincardine.
Norman says she wanted to have things from all around the county not just Kincardine.
She says Bruce County is a great place so people should enjoy all of it – not just certain places.
Clavering chainsaw carving artist Bobbi Switzer did the illustrations for the book.
Switzer says she was very excited when she was approached by Port Elgin based publishing company The Brucedale Press.
She says it is nice to work with a local publisher on a very local project.
The book launch was held on August 14th at the Kincardine Branch of the Bruce County Library.
A portion of the funds raised from the launch went back into the library for the children’s section.
Norman says she wanted to give money back because she thinks we should see more children in library’s.
She adds she would like to begin her next project – which is another children’s book geared to agriculture.
Bruce County Counts is available at The Brucedale Press, the Bruce County Museum and Cultural Centre in Southmapton, Jean’s Gallery in Tiverton, The Turtle’s Crossing in Port Elgin and several other local shops.
