It’s party and winning time at the Owen Sound marina.
The Owen Sound Salmon Spectacular is underway and runs until September 6th.
The Sydenham Sportmens Association is holding the opening ceremony at 7:30 PM Friday at one of the largest derby tents in all of North America.
Co-Chair for the last 22 years – Fred Geberdt – says the event this year has something everyday with huge prizes to be had.
Geberdt says there are lots of categories anglers can win — including the largest salmon and the largest trout.
But there are also daily prizes as well as chances for kids and women to win.
A wedding is also part of the festivities this year — a couple who met at the derby will be married under the tent at Noon Saturday.
There is also plenty of entertainment — from country to rock to 50’s and 60’s music — plus kids days and seniors day.
One of the biggest attractions is the Fish Fry — which takes place tomorrow and next Saturday — and usually draws thousands of people.
Derby tickets are available throughout the city and area at various sporting goods stores – as well as right at the harborfront at the information booth.
People MUST BUY a ticket the day before they hit the water to participate – and must purchase a ticket to be eligible for the prizes.
Prizes include 33-thousand boat motor and trailer package for the largest salmon over all – the largest salmon and trout win a canoe daily.
There are also barbeques and other non-fishing related products up for grabs.
Prizes are also up for grabs with draws held at the marina.
Geberdt says about 35 to 40 thousand anglers from the area and the United States participate – and up to 50-thousand people are expected to visit the site at the harbourfront by the time its over.
Gerberdt says the festival has grown considerably since its opening and over 500 volunteers make it happen.
We will have updates on the derby weigh-ins daily starting today.
