The Mayor of West Grey says the clean-up efforts in Durham after last week’s tornado have been incredible but officials are now getting a clearer picture of the extent of the damage.
The West Grey Community Control Group met Wednesday and have been advised that 55 homes, farms and businesses sustained extensive damage from last Thursday’s tornado.
Some of those homes and businesses will have to torn down.
But Mayor Kevin Eccles tells Bayshore Broadcasting News they want to wait until the full engineers report is complete before deciding how many.
Three businesses were completely destroyed by the tornado and will have to be rebuilt.
Residents are encouraged to get a Property Damage Report form to help officials evaluate the extent of the damage in the community.
The Public Works staff are focusing on damaged areas within Durham.
Staff from the Ministry of Natural Resources are working in the Durham Conservation area but they have been joined by dozens of volunteers and Mayor Eccles says everyone’s efforts have been incredible.
He feels it will make their community stronger and come closer together.
There is also a bank account set up at the CIBC for people who want to donate to the clean up effort.
If residents need trauma counselling — they are asked to contact Victim Services for at 1-866-376-9852.
