West Grey is debating whether to waive building permit fees to Durham residents affected by Thursdays tornado.
The Municipality discussed the possibility of waiving the fees — on the recommendation of Chief Building Official Brian Marcell — at Monday’s Council meeting.
A motion for consideration was nullified after failing to collect the necessary two-thirds of the vote from Council and will instead be introduced at the special September 3rd meeting.
Councillor Carol Lawrence says a resident whose property suffered considerable damage approached Marcell and asked that the building permit fees be waived.
She says it was an unexpected event that produced disastrous results and the Municipality should look beyond the fees and do what they can to help.
But those like Mayor Kevin Eccles and Deputy Mayor Dan Sullivan want to get more information from staff before proceeding with the idea.
Eccles says he hasn’t had a chance to speak with Marcell about waiving the fees since returning from holidays.
He says the current situation is a factor but once they get more information they will make an informed decision when it comes up for a vote on September 2nd.
