The Mayor of West Grey is back from holiday and weighing in on the tornado aftermath.
Kevin Eccles returned home from a vacation in Germany late Sunday night to see the destruction caused by an F-2 tornado that went through Durham last Thursday.
Eccles says he was boarding a plane in Frankfurt on his way back to Canada when he first learned about the tornado that caused tremendous damage to the Durham Industrial Park and killed 11-year-old Owen McPherson of Ayton.
Eccles says when he arrived back in Durham he quickly went to the Durham Industrial Park to see the damage.
He says when he returned there the following day to get a better look he was still in awe of the power and the force from that storm.
Eccles commends the quick response from the Municipality, Durham residents, as well as other communities that came to Durham to lend a hand.
He says he knew the people would come forward to help whether it was friends, family, or neighbours.
Eccles was asked if he was surprised by the support and he responded by saying he would have been surprised if the people didnt come and help.
Eccles says the Municipality will remain under a state of emergency under the recommendation of Police Chief Rene Berger, Fire Chief Phil Schwartz, and E-M-O Field Officer Steve Beatty.
He says it is to allow the volunteers to continue to work in the recovery and be covered by W-S-I-B.
He says it is one thing to get through the incident but dont let valour get in the way of good conscience.
The total damage in Durham is estimated between 7.5 and 9 million dollars.
Eccles says Council will be voting on a motion at a special meeting on September 3rd at 1 P.M. that will seek financial aid from the province.
