Owen Sound residents will soon be seeing new signs around playgrounds, parks and sportsfields.
Council recently implemented a “policy” on smoking in outside areas where children congregate.
Councillor Jim McManaman says the signs will go up recommending residents don’t smoke within nine metres of the parks.
He re iterates however it is only a policy not a bylaw and there will be no fines handed out.
McManaman says right now its a first step — about educating the public on second hand smoke and its effect on children.
He says there are already enforcement issues with the Health Unit’s bylaw prohibiting smoking near the doors of the Bayshore Community Centre and the Coliseum.
McManaman says they may need to revisit the issue down the road if the policy isn’t working.
