Finally there is an affordable way for Hanover and Walkerton residents to discard their e-waste.
The two towns are each going hold an electronic waste disposal day sometime this Fall in which e-waste can be discarded for a very small fee.
Councillor Peter Hambly encourages residents to look around their homes and have their items ready to go.
He doesn’t want anyone to miss the opportunity, e-waste is not accepted at the landfill site, so those who miss out will either have to pay a much higher price to discard it later or hold onto it.
The e-waste day and time is yet to be set however it will only cost 2 dollars per item with the exception of televisions which will cost 5 dollars with a maximum cost of 50 dollars per vehicle.
These prices are much more attractive than the current cost of discarding the items at the e-waste depots in Hanover and Walkerton in which residents can pay as much as 40 dollars to throw out an old TV.
Its hoped the e-waste day will discourage the practice of illegally dumping e-waste on the side of the road or hiding in garbage bags.
Studies have proven that e-waste produces toxins that can leach into the ground, and that is why it has been banned at the landfill site.
Over the last year, 33 thousand pounds of e-waste was collected at the e-waste depots in Hanover and Walkerton.
