Some rural Kincardine property owners are about to see a jump in their property assessment.
The Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) says at least 50 rural properties will no longer be assessed as farms — but as residential instead.
Municipal Treasurer Brenda French says those properties will be assessed at a higher value.
French says this is the first year it has happened and expects to receive some phone calls.
As for the municipality getting involved, Mayor Larry Kraemer says that is possible on one hand.
But he says they also have to be fair to all ratepayers when it comes to the maintenance of local government.
Kraemer says if the municipality is involved, they’ll refer the property owners to MPAC.
Kraemer says as he understands it, the change only affects property owners who are not considered bonafide farmers — and who is and isn’t a farmer is not up to the municipality to decide.
