It could be September before archeologists are done sifting for old bones from the sandy soil below Edgehill Cemetery in Wiarton.
They were called in this spring, after unusually warm weather and heavy rain just after Christmas, saturated the soil and collapsed the oldest section of the pioneer cemetery at Colpoys bay.
As many as 40 graves tumbled down the hillside, exposing some remains and carrying headstones up to 40 metres away.
Under terms of the Cemeteries Act — South Bruce Peninsula had little choice but to call in experts to sift thru the remains, catalogue and determine what happens to the bones now.
It is costing the town up to 200 thousand dollars to bring in the Senior Archeologist and 10 other archeologists or archaeology students from Wilfred Laurier university for the dig.
Site workers are sifting in metre-square plots to recover remains and chart what they find.
Racher says they started mid-June and they expect it will take most of the rest of the summer to complete the job.
