Kincardine Council is sticking up for rural postal service.
A report on Canada Post’s recent strategic review recommends the current moratorium on rural post office closures be lifted — and to replace publicly-owned post offices with private outlets.
Rural mailbox delivery could also be reconsidered.
Council has moved to reject the recommendations of the report, and is notifying Huron Bruce MP Ben Lobb.
Council also will request that Minister of State for Transport Rob Merrifield — who is responsible for Canada Post — consult the public, postal unions, and other stakeholders to develop a more democratic process for changing what Canada Post does.
Councillor Ron Hewitt says the government started closing rural post offices many years ago, and now they’re looking for an excuse to remove it.
He says it’s an issue that needs to be addressed and not allowed to happen.
As for possibly losing rural delivery, Hewitt says he can’t imagine people in this area having to drive several miles every day just to pick up their mail.
