Kincardine’s Youth Coalition — called ” Youth Waves ” — is gearing up for some fun today.
They have an afternoon of games and entertainment planned at Station Beach from 1 PM to 4 PM.
Member Jacquie Fair says activities like waterfights, relay races, and eating contests are among the things they have planned.
Anyone aged 12 to 18 is welcome.
Fair is hoping for at least five teams of five competing, but more would be great and all you have to do is show up.
Youth Waves has also asked the municipality for support — not necessarily the financial variety.
Fair says they are looking for space to hold their meetings.
Mayor Larry Kraemer says they weren’t specific, but he’s supportive of what the group is doing.
He says everyone in the community wants to help the youth and give them direction.
Fair says 25 young people are involved with Youth Waves — an initiative that was spearheaded last year by the Grey Bruce Health Unit.
Jackiq Hagaartes — one of the group’s adult advisors — says the health unit saw a need for a local youth coalition in Kincardine, after other successful ones were set up in Port Elgin.
She says the goal is to have Kincardine designated a “Youth Friendly Community”.
Hagaartes says Youth Waves started under the direction of a nurse at Kincardine District Secondary School as a way of encouraging healthy choices.
She says youth from other communities will be attending today’s event at Station Beach as well.
