There are more calls for the province to make it mandatory to wear a Lifejackets anytime a person is in a boat.
This after a rash of drowning deaths in Ontario over the past number of weeks.
Barbara Byers is the Public Education Director of the Lifesaving Society.
She tells Bayshore Broadcasting News every year more than 500 people drown in Canada and almost everyone of those deaths could have been prevented if the person was wearing a lifejacket.
She says the current regulations that require there be a lifejacket for everyone in a boat do not go far enough.
In fact, Byers says the rules should be changed to make sure people are wearing those personal flotation devices.
Byers says just having the PFD’s in a boat does not mean you can get your hands on it in an emergency.
She says many times people are unexpectedly thrown out of a boat and have no chance to grab a lifejacket.
Byers says coupled with the cold water shock experienced when a person first enters the water and some of that water going down your windpipe, you will drown very quickly.
She says people should look at lifejackets the same way they look at the use of a seatbelt in your automobile.
Byers says unless you are wearing it, it cannot save your life.
