The cleanup continues after a wicked storm ripped through the Meaford area.
Director of Operations Steve Vokes says it will take municipal staff a few days to deal with Sunday night’s storm.
Vokes also wants residents to know they’re extending the hours of the Leaf and Yard Waste Depot. While it is typically only open on Fridays and Saturdays, Vokes says the facility will be open Wednesday and Thursday afternoon as residents clean up their yards.
He says if they can get it organized quickly enough, they may even be able to open the depo today, he suggests calling the municipality to check.
Vokes says it was a fairly wicked storm, but it was localized to urban Meaford, specifically Nelson Street near the downtown.
He does add some other pockets throughout the municipality, such as Hoath Head, were also affected.
Vokes says the damage is mostly fallen hydro lines and tree branches.
He says there were two cases where families could not could out of their driveways because of downed lines.
Mayor Francis Richardson says the fire department did a great job helping out in those situations, and also in responding to a transmission fire on the 7th Line.
Vokes says the cost of the storm will be minimal, with residents responsible for their own properties and town staff taking care of municipal road allowances.
He says this is the kind of storm you expect at this time of year, and is not a matter of it will happen, but when.
The storm knocked out power to hundreds of Hydro One customers in the Meaford area Sunday evening, with some people not back online until 10 o’clock Monday night.
